A
renouned sculptor, Richard
Serra's works on paper are an integral part of his
artistic endeavors. Typically, he makes drawings or
prints after the completion of his sculptures as a way
of re-visiting and re-examining the 3-dimensional forms.
As the title implies, the Venice Notebook Series
were inspired by the sculptures exhibited in Venice
at the Biennale last year. The two sculptures created
for the 2001 Venice Biennale are enormous weatherproof
steel forms tightly wound into spirals with almost maze-like
intensity. The tops and bottoms of these torqued spiral
sculptures are dramatically pulled in different directions,
creating passageways of varying widths.
